Thrive – Independent Living Program

Thrive is an independent living program where you can develop life skills and confidence in a supportive group setting.

It’s been amazing seeing him do things of his own volition—he just wants to do it. His confidence has grown so much, and building those skills has had a flow-on effect in so many other areas of his life.

– Participant Parent – 2025 Thrive Program

Together with your ‘housemates’, you’ll work towards creating a future where living independently is not just a possibility, but a reality.

Thrive immerses you in independent living with a hands-on approach. Every fortnight for 10 weeks, you’ll live with housemates in a small group for three days (2 nights), applying skills like cooking, cleaning, budgeting, self-care, and time management—all while maintaining your regular daytime activities. Our staff will support you as you take on real-life tasks and build the confidence to live independently.

The Program

The program runs year-round with new 10-week blocks starting in January, April, July and October. Each program is developed to provide a unique experience, with ongoing focus areas throughout the year, so that participants have the opportunity to really solidify the skills they have learned.

We currently run the following programs on a fortnightly basis (start and finish times are flexible based on your personal schedule):

Week 1:
  • Female group 1 : Monday 3pm – Wednesday 9am
  • Male group 1 : Wednesday 3pm- Friday 9am
Week 2:
  • Male group 2 : Monday 3pm – Wednesday 9am
  • Female group 2 : Wednesday 3pm- Friday 9am

EXAMPLE PROGRAM PLAN

Weeks 1 & 2 – Routines & Daily Life

Weeks 3 & 4 – My Safety

Week 5 (& 6 for Q2) – Healthy Body, Healthy Mind (includes group outing in the final week)

We recommend that people start at the beginning of a new block. If you are interested in joining our Thrive community and would like to start straight away, we would be happy to discuss any current program vacancies with you

At the end of their Thrive journey, we want participants to:

  • Have a clear plan for their independent living future
  • Understand the housing options available to them
  • Have developed the skills for greater independence
  • Strengthen social and emotional connections with peers
  • Gain confidence in travel training
Pricing Explained

Our Thrive program utilises a person’s Core Supports budget from their NDIS plan, offering flexibility with multiple pricing options so you get the most out of your funding.

NDIA Funding options (per 10 week program)

Budget Budget Category Approx NDIS Funding required (1:2 ratio)
01 Core Supports (Assistance with Daily Life) $7,400.00**
01 + 04 Core Supports (Assistance with Daily Life) + (Assistance with Social & Community Participation) $7,400.00**
01 Core Supports (Short Term Respite) $10,500.00

** These options incur a small out of pocket expense of $250.00 per person, per session which covers accommodation and food costs. If required, we can work with you to develop a payment plan so that cost does not become a barrier to participation.

Meet Dude
Dude had a goal to move out of home since 2020. With the help of his mum, Dude was working on his skills at home and with his support workers and had started to research housing options available to him. During Covid, Dude began taking steps to independence through our Empower Escapes program, and then became one of the founding participants of the Thrive program in 2023.

Over the course of the next 12 months Dude attended Thrive every fortnight, further developing his skills in areas such as cooking, budgeting, general house cleaning, engaging in social connection with peers and managing his time around his other programs.

During this time his support workers saw a huge growth in his confidence and skills, focusing on aspects such as learning how to use a washing machine and dryer from start to finish, or understanding food choices that would benefit his health and contributing his thoughts into meal plans.

In mid- 2024 Dude took the big step of deciding that he wanted to actively start looking for a house to move in to. To support this transition, staff working with him at Thrive started a step-down approach with him, gradually reducing the amount of assistance he needed to complete tasks and encouraged him to try things on his own.

In October, Dude’s dream of living independently came true when he moved into his very own home, which he now shares with 2 friends and his cat Brie.
